Battery Percentage iOS 16: Why It's Missing from iPhone XR and iPhone 11

Thankfully, if you're using an iPhone 8 or later, you should still be able to enjoy most of the benefits that iOS 16 brings. However, some iPhone models are missing out on a crucial feature - battery percentage display. Specifically, the iPhone XR and iPhone 11 will not be able to show battery percentage in their status bar.

We've reached out to Apple to find out more about why these iPhones won't be able to display battery percentage, and if we hear anything back, we'll be sure to update this piece. Here, we suspect it could be something to do with the screen's resolution - the lower res iPhone 11 and iPhone XR may not have enough pixels to clearly display the new battery icon - but we're not 100% certain.

The mini iPhones make the most sense: their 5.4-inch displays are pretty small, and even with the change to how battery percentage is displayed, they may still not be large enough to display the details clearly. However, that doesn't explain the iPhone XR and iPhone 11 as both of these smartphones have larger 6.1-inch displays - that's the same screen size as the iPhone 12, which isn't exempt from the update.

This will likely help make our camera rolls slightly less crowded with screenshots. On the other hand, the iPhone 11 is missing out on one of iOS 16's most requested features. Now a copy and delete option has been added to that. Previously, once a screenshot was taken, the menu included options to save to Quick Note or Files, delete and save to photos. The image can then be pasted into an email, message or Notes.

This option makes it easy to copy a screenshot to the clipboard as soon as you take it. There is a new 'copy and delete' option that appears once you take a screenshot with the iOS 16 beta 5. Apple has not taken away the battery percentage from iPhones this time - whether your phone is charging, on low power mode or not charging, the battery percentage will be shown.

Apple had removed the battery percentage from iPhones with the introduction of notches on the iPhone X. The battery percentage feature is apparently not available on the iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 12 mini, and iPhone 13 mini, according to 9to5Mac. With this welcome update, that will change. An extra step was added to view the battery percentage after taking a screenshot and users then had to swipe down in the control center to view exactly how much battery they had left. There was probably limited space to include everything in the status bar, which is why Apple did away with it.

When your phone is not charging, the battery percentage will show up inside the battery icon, and even when an iPhone is on low power mode, the battery will turn yellow, but the percentage will still be seen.
